Indigenous and Quilombola Outreach Program (PEIQ)

The Indigenous and Quilombola Outreach Program (PEIQ), coordinated by the Prorectorate for Outreach and Extension (PROEX) in partnership with the Prorectorate for Affirmative Action and Equity (PROAFE), emerged from the mobilization of Indigenous and Quilombola students at UFSC, who called for greater visibility, respect, and meaningful action both within the University and in their communities.

PEIQ consolidates a process that began in 2022, when UFSC initiated activities with the Laklãnõ-Xokleng Indigenous Territory and mapped projects already being developed within the institution. This effort brought together initiatives and academic leaders engaged in work with Indigenous and Quilombola peoples, giving rise to a structuring, integrative, long-term program.

At its core, PEIQ is based on intercultural cooperation. Rather than a one-way transfer of knowledge, it builds actions through dialogue and the protagonism of Indigenous and Quilombola peoples, respecting their ways of life, memories, knowledge, and territorial ties.

PEIQ seeks to:

  • promote conditions that support the successful retention of Indigenous and Quilombola students at UFSC;
  • develop initiatives in areas such as education, culture, health, income generation, and housing, based on the demands and priorities identified by the communities;
  • disseminate information about degree programs, admission pathways, and student support policies, contributing to greater access to UFSC campuses for Indigenous and Quilombola youth;
  • establish partnerships with institutions and civil society organizations, supporting public policies and the protection of territories, languages, and identities.

Through this commitment, UFSC reaffirms that university outreach is also an instrument of historical reparation, social justice, and the co-creation of knowledge. PEIQ thus serves as an ethical and political bridge between the University and Indigenous and Quilombola communities, strengthening ties, broadening horizons, and ensuring that academic knowledge advances alongside the ancestral knowledge that sustains these peoples and their ways of life.
